The Thinking-Man’s Game

The third year of Donahue Academy’s baseball program is proving to be one of exciting growth, strong camaraderie, and deep appreciation for the game. For these Shamrocks, baseball is more than just a game – it is an opportunity to think, to lead, and to grow together.

Throughout the season, players have embraced both the physical and mental demands of the sport. As senior Jack Kadlec shared, “Just having the control of the game, having the teammates behind me cheering me on as a pitcher, it feels amazing—it’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced in sports.” That sense of unity and encouragement is evident across the team, where players consistently support one another both on and off the field.

Baseball at Donahue can be described as “a thinking man’s game,” a phrase that reflects the constant awareness and decision-making required in every moment of play. Senior Benedict Valle emphasized this aspect, noting, “It’s such a mental game, there’s so many situations that you gotta know where to go with the ball… everybody has to go somewhere when the ball’s hit.” Each pitch and play demands focus, discipline, and quick thinking – skills that align naturally with the school’s rigorous academic formation.

Head Coach Deacon Paul Sparrow sees a clear connection between the classroom and the field. “Every single kid who has gone through the program has been top-shelf… they want to learn, they pay attention, they really want to get better,” he said. “Baseball, you’re thinking every play, every pitch… and luckily, Donahue produces some pretty bright kids.”

Adding to the excitement this season is the opportunity to practice and play home games at the Ave Maria University baseball field. The facility has brought new energy and convenience to the team. “It is amazing to have a field this amazing… it’s the greatest opportunity we could have gotten,” one player shared. Deacon Sparrow also highlighted the impact of being at home: it saves time, supports the classroom, and gives the Shamrocks a real advantage.

As the season unfolds, Donahue Baseball continues to build not only skilled athletes, but thoughtful, disciplined young men—proving that this truly is a thinking man’s game.
