Model UN Winners!
March 28, 2023

Junior Mary Fairchild won The Greg Hudson Award for Best Position Paper and a prize of $2000 at the recent SWFL Model UN Conference held at Florida Gulf Coast University. Students from 60 public and private high schools in Charlotte, Lee, and Collier counters competed, and hundreds of position papers were submitted. Mary served as the US delegate to the UN Security Council and advocated for monetary and training reforms to address the issue of historical ineffectiveness of UN international peacekeeping forces. Judges, area college faculty and business leaders, chose Mary’s position paper as best written and most persuasive.
Sophomore Luke Velasco placed 3rd in Committee Awards as US delegate to the UN Environment Programs committee, where the topic was preventing land degradation. “It’s hard to know exactly why a judge awards points, but I think the key is not being afraid to voice concerns and interests. It is also important to be a good listener.” Winners also generally must be well prepared and work well with other delegates to write and pass resolutions.
Congratulations, Mary and Luke on your hard work and well-deserved honors!
